I started sewing around the age of 13 too. If I had fabric? I made something. Shirts, jackets, dresses, pants, shorts, you name it, if I could think of something, I did it. And then I just kind of left this skill sitting in the back of a closet for about 20 years.
In 2012, my daughter, AJ, graduated from high school, and had her prom. She didn’t want just any dress though; she wanted something crazy and unique and didn’t want to look like all the other girls. So we designed her dress. Using black snake-skin satin, a funky splash of fabric waistband and a detachable lime green and purple tutu, AJ had her dream prom dress. Even better was the fact that the tutu was detachable, so for her graduation day? She had a cute little black dress. And since there was tulle left over from making her dress, I decided to make a tutu dress for our youngest daughter, Ella (who coincidentally was named after my great-grandma). The pictures turned out gorgeous. And AJ was so happy, she had her custom prom dress, and a grad dress too!
